But before Krupp could fill up the paperwork to make it happen, George hypnotizes Krupp with a 3D Hypno-Ring he received out of a cereal box the boys see that Krupp bears a resemblance to Captain Underpants without his toupee and command him to be Captain Underpants. With that in mind, Krupp happily decides to place George and Harold in separate classes in order to annihilate their friendship and their pranks. George and Harold's pranks come to an apparent end after they tamper with a toilet invention called the Turbo Toilet 2000 made by the school's local snitch Melvin Sneedly. He also hates their Captain Underpants comics as he forbids them from creating any in the school grounds, even tearing up their latest one detailing the origins of the superhero. Krupp is bent on busting George and Harold of their multiple pranks they had done to him and the other staff, though he finds it upsetting that he hasn't gotten any evidence to have them punished. However as Captain Underpants he is on the opposite side, he is as he is nice and kind to everyone, especially children. But he is very dim-witted and at first he thought he did have superpowers.īiography Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie It is mostly because he has been alone most of his life. The film’s lone weakness is that it’s extremely male-dominated with only a few female characters such as the lunch lady. Face it: You can’t have a story with a character named Poppypants and bog it down with intricate plot twists and layered stories. A simple story leaves more time for silly jokes and light-hearted humor. Nicholas Stoller’s screenplay (he wrote the script for the funny “Storks”) never gets more complicated than good vs. Soren gives Hart just enough room to make his voice work without going too far. There have been times when directors have not been able to fully harness that energy and Hart’s performance can be as tiring as trying to keep up with that third grader on a sugar high. Director David Soren opts to use a little higher quality computer-generated style of animation, but while it gives the characters more substance, the essence of the characters and stories remain true to the source.Ĭasting Hart was a superb move as he always brings an energy to his acting roles that are on the same level as a third grader eating a bag of sugar for dinner. The film follows relatively closely to the series of books written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey. If that planetary joke comes across as crass, then either skip the movie or lighten up a little. If you still giggle when someone mentions the seventh planet from the son is Uranus, then get ready to blow some laugh snot bubbles. The important thing is that while the production never reaches for intellectual grandeur, it is on a very basic level one of the funniest movies of the year. ![]() ‘Galaxy’ sequel gets emotional, but still a lot of fun Reimagined ‘King Arthur’ should be dethroned Review: Dwayne Johnson's bland 'Baywatch' can't commit to the absurd More reviews: Johnny Depp rides rough seas in new 'Pirates' Of course, anyone of the animated feature film’s target audience who has read one of the 70 million books sold around the world featuring the rotund hero and the elementary students who created him knows that already. “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” is childish and silly.
